The structure of Tino Sehgal's seminal work “These associations” is composed of a large number of people who mysteriously move through the exhibition space in complex patterns that are neither random nor controlled, and that occasionally cease and propose philosophical issues somewhere. A collective with no hierarchy or stable order, whose members individually break free from this endless movement to tell visitors stories of their life experiences. “These Associations” creates a new type of collectivity whose porous limits can include the viewer himself. The work explores the group identity in relation to the subjectivity of each member, and presents a series of challenging questions about how new forms of collective rooting can be created, transforming the exhibition space into an enigmatic and changing sociological experiment.
